  • Business Development Manager (Europe based)

    Seaspan is seeking a  Business Development Manager to join the team.  The Business Development Manager is responsible for client relationship management and business development/sales activities to grow Seaspan’s current client base and market share, primarily throughout Europe. The Business Development Manager liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers. The role will also provide area representation for our operation and support as required.  Our preference is for the position to be based out of Hamburg, but are flexible in the Europe region for the right candidate.

    This position requires strong communication and negotiation skills, a broad understanding of our business and customers as well as proven sales/chartering experience to market, develop and seek new opportunities to grow our business.  This person must be capable of proactively interfacing with Seaspan's customers/market and various industry stakeholders to sell Seaspan services and demonstrate the drive and ambition to succeed in a competitive global industry.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Drives business development/sales activities related to new business opportunities and vessel chartering to maximize revenues and favorable employment rates.
    • Liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels as well as knowledge of customers issues to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers.

    • Researches, monitors and reports on market conditions, trends and chartering rates for the industry through all appropriate means.
    • Develops and implements marketing and chartering strategies to provide integrated services that meet clients’ requirements and revenue/growth for the company.
    • Strengthens and manages relationships with Seaspan customers. Proactively engages clients on various aspects of their business to provide Customer profile knowledge to Seaspan and to provide tailored best-in-class customer service and response to business needs, challenges and requirements.
    • Monitors charter party obligations of company vessels.  Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with charterers while effectively identifying, communicating internally and managing risks and business interests.
    • Carries out continual risk assessment of vessel operations for potential loss-situations and recommends and assists with mitigation measures.
    • Assists with compiling factual, timely information and documents relating to commercial claims.
    • Demonstrates team work; establishes rapport and maintains effective working relationships within the office(s) and external customers.
    • Performs duties in accordance with the company Safety Management System (SMS); adheres to ISM and company standards.
    • Support and manage new business development initiatives/ projects or other duties as required.

    Job Requirements:

    • Post-secondary degree in relevant field from a recognized institution
    • Minimum three years’ experience in similar chartering or commercial management role with focus on business development/sales activities (formal sales training an asset)
    • Proven track-record in Business Development in the ship chartering business
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
    • Able to negotiate with and influence others, establish rapport and build and maintain effective working relationships
    • Must be well connected within the shipping community, credible and capable of going out into the market and growing the business.
    • Good understanding of time charter parties and commercial operations, containership industry

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Completed at least three Professional Qualifying Examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) or is a qualified ICS member

  • Drydock Manager, Asset Integrity

    Seaspan is seeking a Drydock Manager, Asset Integrity, to join the team based in our Hong Kong office. The Drydock Manager, Asset Integrity, reporting to Director, Asset Integrity, ensures the safe, efficient, timely and economic dry-docking repairs of the company’s fleet of vessels through management of the shipyard repair managers, contractors, and foremen. This position liaises with other departments which support the vessel operations, such as vessel managers, Projects and Technology, and Marine Services. The purpose of the role is to provide technical support to the Vessel Manager and Vessel Crew to ensure that drydocks and lay-up repairs are performed safely and efficiently and timely

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provides technical assistance and technical support to all matters relating to drydock operations
    • Participates in regular meetings with the Director, Asset Integrity and other cross-functional teams as required
    • Participates in daily drydock meetings
    • Works with the vessel manager and shipyard repair manager to optimize and plan the repair schedule
    • Provides daily reports to the vessel manager on the progress made on repairs
    • Provides daily reports to the vessel manager on the compliance of the repair timeline

    Requirements

    • Previous experience as a chief engineer, mechanical engineer, or naval architect
    • Minimum five years of experience in a superintendent level position or higher
    • Thorough understanding of and experienced in the technical aspects involving the dismantling and fitting of shaft lines and bearings, propellers, rudders, hull steel replacements and hull coating processes
    • Strong technical skills
    • Able to coordinate the workflow processes between all parties and processes involved in drydocks and afloat repairs
    • Able to read and interpret technical drawings and diagrams such as hull drawings, piping and electrical diagrams

    The Seaspan finance team shares a high performance culture with a focus and dedication to best in class capital allocation practices. The Treasury Team is a central pillar of the broader finance team’s strategy.

    As a member of the Finance Team, the Director, Treasury works closely with the President and CEO, Treasurer and CFO to manage existing $5bn+ portfolio of financings across 50+ credit facilities and leases and 40+ banks, supports origination and execution financing initiatives.  The position will require international travel, creative thinking, and the candidate must be able to communicate effectively in Mandarin.     KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Manages existing $5bn+ portfolio of financings across 50+ credit facilities (secured and unsecured) and leases (operating, structured, and capital leases), and ensuring compliance with all maintenance and incurrence covenants, which includes information, financial, operating, and security (earnings, mortgage, credit insurance) covenants
    • Supports Treasurer and CFO in negotiating and modifying existing security packages and financing terms to improve pricing and flexibility
    • Works with the President and CEO, Treasurer and CFO to manage and develop relationships with advisors, banks, investors and capital providers in APAC
    • Identifies and evaluates new banks, financing structures and capital markets accesses in various regions with a particular focus on Greater China
    • Guided by the Treasurer, as the point person in negotiating and execution of financing terms and documentation, ensuring all terms and conditions are met, from cradle-to-grave (term sheet, documentation, conditions for closing/funding, and post-funding inclusion/incorporation into financing portfolio management and reporting, until fully repaid)

    PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS

    • Creative thinking with a can-do mentality, minimum 8 years of experience in working and managing a portfolio of financings (for issuer) or loan portfolio (for bank)
    • Hands on experience in modeling and analysis for financing/loan cash flows
    • Expert in negotiating and executing transactions, with strong project management for full financing cycle
    • Strong understanding of accounting principles and corporate finance
    • Must read, write and speak fluent Mandarin with a high-degree of proficiency

    Seaspan is seeking a Personnel Officer to join the team in our Mumbai office. The Personnel Officer is responsible for managing communication between management offices and sea staff, and coordinates with global port agents to ensure that crew on-boarding and off-boarding arrangements are performed efficiently in cost-effective ports. This position works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistants to ensure that “fit to travel” requirements are achieved and completed before sea staff are dispatched to company-managed vessels.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Ensures timely completion of required activities outlines in the Competence Development Plan (CDP) before sea staff are dispatched, schedules sea staff pre-joining briefings, and advises all parties with follow-up reports
    • Ensures logistics of sea staff and supernumeraries joining and off-signing are carried out promptly and communicated to agents, vessel and other as required
    • Works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistant to ensure that all crew relief nomination have valid documentation and met all visa requirements
    • Coordinates daily with the planner on crew relief nominations and provides daily status updates to the assistant personnel superintendent
    • Communicates with vessels and provides timely responses where possible; also escalates pertinent concerns and issues onboard to relevant senior manager as required
    • Arranges and reviews flag state documentation status of sea staff, ensuring compliance at all time; also applies for flags state dispensation where required
    • Approved travel expenses and other vendor bills as applicable for officers joining or signing-off and their supernumeraries (escalates exceptions to policy or costs which exceed signing authority)
    • Prepares management reports where required

    The Senior Training Superintendent oversees the training department and other superintendents with respect to navigation and ensures smooth operations in the training department. The Associate Counsel should be knowledgeable with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory standards, MARPOL, sanctions, anti-bribery, crewing union agreements, vessel chartering contracts and shipbuilding agreements. The Associate Counsel will also deal with insurance and maritime related litigation and dispute resolution matters, and will be directly instructing external counsel on these matters.

    The Associate Counsel will work with a great degree of autonomy, must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage projects with a number of cross functional groups. As well, the Associate Counsel will be responsible for formulating, setting and enforcing policies.

    The Associate Counsel will be joining a department that currently consists of three other lawyers (including the General Counsel), one paralegal and one legal assistant.  From time to time, the Associate Counsel will assist on securities offerings, financings, corporate governance and board meetings.

    Requirements:

    • Be a qualified lawyer in good standing with a Canadian, UK or US bar association
    • A minimum five-year call

    • Prepares for scheduled dry dockings, surveys and repairs on assigned ships, and arranges and manages supply of spares, stores, and services to vessels before scheduled maintenance and breakdown repairs

    • Analyses ships’ performance and relays this information to the onboard master and chief engineer; ensures compliance with current charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns

    • Prepares budgets in the required detail for the yearly operation of assigned ships, scheduled dry dockings, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc modifications and repairs within required timelines
    • Monitors expenses of assigned vessels and submits monthly variance reporting and tracks against budget
    • Ensures that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures
    • Communicates expectations to direct reports; manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members

    Requirements

    • External candidates must have at least one year of experience as a technical superintendent  or vessel manager in a company managing handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading and must have a minimum of one full year in rank as a chief engineer
    • Internal candidates must have completed three contracts as a chief engineer with Seaspan
    • English language skills, both verbal and written, must be effective and suitable for a multi-cultural working environment

    • Reviews existing and drafts new procedures, policies and reference material in the Management System related to marine and occupational safety aspects of operation
    • When required conducts onboard incident investigation and follow-up corrective and preventive actions are implemented onboard assigned vessels
    • Conducts orientation and preparation of senior officers visiting the office
    •  In cooperation with other departments, supports training efforts. Provides input on marine related competencies and training courses.  Conducts interviews and assessments of prospective senior deck officers (promotion or new joiners)
    • Participates in the company’s emergency response team and supporting the vessel and Emergency Management Team for all marine related aspects

    Requirements

    • Minimum of three years of experience in a similar role in a ship owner or ship management company

    Seaspan is seeking a Human Resources Manager to join the team.  The Human Resources Manager provides human resource and payroll services for Seaspan shore employees and supervises the Vancouver office services team. Responsibilities include recruitment and retention, employee relations, orientations, performance management, and administration. The position supports compliance with legislation and company policies as they relate to employees.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Recruits, interviews and selects employees with the hiring manager to fill vacancies for shore based positions and completes the necessary hiring paperwork. Recruits directly and maintains contacts with placement agencies, using when necessary

    • Manages payroll* and benefits in compliance with public company requirements. Assists with compensation planning and management. Liaises with financial services and provides reporting

    • Provides consultation and advice to management and employees in the areas of performance management, employee development, and on related policies and legislation; interprets relevant policies, procedures, practices and legislation

    • Ensures compliance with legislation related to employment, assists with public company corporate governance requirements, prepares HR reports as required

    • Responds to queries, resolves issues, and facilitates communication.Surveys staff on engagement, conducts exit interviews responds to employee suggestions and participates in organizing company events.

    • Ensures new employees are properly oriented when joining the company and are familiarized with key policies

    Seaspan is seeking a Manager, Regulation & Compliance to join the team. The Manager, Regulation & Compliance is responsible for   the effective implementation and ongoing development of the company’s environmental management system on both company vessels and in company offices. This position maximizes the operational efficiency from the managed vessels in strict compliance with the international and national regulations while satisfying the requirements of its customers. The incumbent constructively engages, in an efficient cooperative manner with other functional groups and departments, to ensure the company meets current regulation and compliance as it relates to Marine, Health, Safety, Quality and Environmental matters. 

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Tracks and interprets relevant environmental regulations, communicates information to vessels, shore staff and New Build department to ensure compliance with environmental legislation

    • Builds relationships and liaises with regulatory bodies, such as US Coast Guard. Participates in environmental industry associations and committees

    • Provides guidance, information and training on regulatory matters to other departments and sea staff

    • Maintains the legislation register on all upcoming regulatory requirements and looks at trends for the future

    • Works with internal stakeholders to position the company for future requirements

    • Drives the implementation of environmental policies and practices onboard and ashore

    • Update relevant documents and plans to ensure the most current regulations are followed:

      • Ballast Water Management Plans to  as needed to ensure compliance with MARPOL and US regulations

      • Biofouling Management Plan- maintain and add updates as regulations change 

      • MRV report monitoring with DNVGL, widening in 2019 to IMO CO2 reporting,

      • SEEMP – updates needed for IMO changes to MARPOL Annex VI

      • Garbage Management Plan as needed to ensure compliance with MARPOL.

    • Issuing of annual certificates to vessels at completion of monitoring period

    • Manages the development and employment of systems to ensure compliance, record-keeping and preparation for:

      • ISM code certification

      • ISO standards systems compliance and future certification

      • Regulatory codes, international regulations

      • USCG and other relevant national and flag state authority requirements

      • Documentation, tracking, statistics, and reporting

    Job Requirements:

    • Proven senior management experience in a competitive shipping environment in a ship owning or third-party ship management company

    • Full understanding of Marine and HSEQ management principles and their application and working knowledge of relevant industry regulations, procedures, audits, and instructions

    • Strong technical and documentation skills including the development and implementation of documents and procedures, emergency response documents, plans and procedures

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style

    • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

    Seaspan is seeking a JDE Application Support Analyst to join the IT team. The JDE Application Support Analyst provides support for the JD Edwards Enterprise One Application implementation at Seaspan. In providing such support, this individual will track issues, investigate problems and determine resolutions/or capture enough detail to escalate when required. Duties will include assisting clients with troubleshooting and problem solving, supporting upgrades and enhancements, execution of routine and non-routine support procedures, documentation, testing, and change management.

     

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Focuses on working with the Finance team to support the JD Edwards application
    • Understands company business processes as required in order to provide support
    • Provides support for application maintenance, modification and enhancement as required through problem solving, development, testing, and documentation
    • Works with business users and application developers to identify bugs, recommend and implement enhancements
    • Provides identification, tracking and resolution of application problems, both on-board and within the office, on a day-to-day basis via the IT Ticketing system, including evening and weekend support
    • Document issues, observations and outcomes accurately within the IT ticket system to ensure enough information is captured to act on the ticket efficiently
    • Communicates with stakeholders (written and verbal) clearly to ensure issues are dealt with quickly and efficiently

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
