  • Business Development Manager (Europe based)

    Seaspan is seeking a  Business Development Manager to join the team.  The Business Development Manager is responsible for client relationship management and business development/sales activities to grow Seaspan’s current client base and market share, primarily throughout Europe. The Business Development Manager liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers. The role will also provide area representation for our operation and support as required.  Our preference is for the position to be based out of Hamburg, but are flexible in the Europe region for the right candidate.

    This position requires strong communication and negotiation skills, a broad understanding of our business and customers as well as proven sales/chartering experience to market, develop and seek new opportunities to grow our business.  This person must be capable of proactively interfacing with Seaspan's customers/market and various industry stakeholders to sell Seaspan services and demonstrate the drive and ambition to succeed in a competitive global industry.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Drives business development/sales activities related to new business opportunities and vessel chartering to maximize revenues and favorable employment rates.
    • Liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels as well as knowledge of customers issues to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers.
    • Establishes network of key contacts and actively markets and sells Seaspan’s services to grow our client base; engages with customers as well as various key stakeholders within the marine shipping community.
    • Researches, monitors and reports on market conditions, trends and chartering rates for the industry through all appropriate means.
    • Develops and implements marketing and chartering strategies to provide integrated services that meet clients’ requirements and revenue/growth for the company.
    • Strengthens and manages relationships with Seaspan customers. Proactively engages clients on various aspects of their business to provide Customer profile knowledge to Seaspan and to provide tailored best-in-class customer service and response to business needs, challenges and requirements.
    • Monitors charter party obligations of company vessels.  Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with charterers while effectively identifying, communicating internally and managing risks and business interests.
    • Carries out continual risk assessment of vessel operations for potential loss-situations and recommends and assists with mitigation measures.
    • Assists with compiling factual, timely information and documents relating to commercial claims.
    • Demonstrates team work; establishes rapport and maintains effective working relationships within the office(s) and external customers.
    • Performs duties in accordance with the company Safety Management System (SMS); adheres to ISM and company standards.
    • Support and manage new business development initiatives/ projects or other duties as required.

    Job Requirements:

    • Post-secondary degree in relevant field from a recognized institution
    • Minimum three years’ experience in similar chartering or commercial management role with focus on business development/sales activities (formal sales training an asset)
    • Proven track-record in Business Development in the ship chartering business
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
    • Able to negotiate with and influence others, establish rapport and build and maintain effective working relationships
    • Must be well connected within the shipping community, credible and capable of going out into the market and growing the business.
    • Good understanding of time charter parties and commercial operations, containership industry
    • Must be able to properly analyze situations, mitigate and manage risk, and determine a suitable course of action as part of problem-solving skills

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Completed at least three Professional Qualifying Examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) or is a qualified ICS member

    • Containership sector experience is strongly preferred.

    The Vessel Manager is responsible for the safe, reliable and economical operation of assigned vessels. The position applies knowledge of engineering, HR-management, shipping-industry regulations, commercial and legal considerations, and guides sea-staff onboard assigned vessels. The Vessel Manager also takes initiative to continuously improve the performance of assigned ships and strengthens the teamwork between ship and office. 

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Guides, advises, and monitors vessel operations; also assists crew performing vessel maintenance
    • Researches technical information related to equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, improvements, upgrades or modifications for the reliable long-term performance of the vessels
    • Prepares for scheduled dry dockings, surveys and repairs on assigned ships, and arranges and manages supply of spares, stores, and services to vessels before scheduled maintenance and breakdown repairs
    • Manages vessels in full compliance with local and international rules and regulations; and with Seaspan’s Safety Management System (SMS)
    • Analyses ships’ performance and relays this information to the onboard master and chief engineer; ensures compliance with current charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns
    • Ensures compliance with all necessary operational certification and survey requirements applicable to assigned vessels
    • Visits vessels in port; may sail with Seaspan ships to reasonably ascertain that they are operated in a safe, reliable and economical way
    • Monitors function and performance during ship visits and initiates effective problem solving of on-board issues, including technical, quality-assurance, health and safety, commercial or personnel issues
    • Takes ownership of on-board issues and follows them through to resolution
    • Prepares budgets in the required detail for the yearly operation of assigned ships, scheduled dry dockings, surveys, repairs and ad-hoc modifications and repairs within required timelines
    • Monitors expenses of assigned vessels and submits monthly variance reporting and tracks against budget
    • Ensures that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures
    • Communicates expectations to direct reports; manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members

    Requirements

    • External candidates must have at least one year of experience as a technical superintendent  or vessel manager in a company managing handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading and must have a minimum of one full year in rank as a chief engineer
    • Internal candidates must have completed three contracts as a chief engineer with Seaspan
    • English language skills, both verbal and written, must be effective and suitable for a multi-cultural working environment
    • Strong technical knowledge
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
    • Class 1 marine engineer certificate either valid or last renewed within the previous five years

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Works with the Global Talent Acquisition (GTA) team to select qualified and highly competent officers (and crew) for the company’s vessels. Conducts selection interviews and advises the GTA Manager of staffing needs

    • Approves assignment of officers to vessels as recommended by the team’s planners.  Oversees on boarding and sign-off of ship staff and manages any issues or exceptions to company policy regarding ship assignment

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Drafts and negotiates confidentiality agreements, commercial contracts, including procurement and management services agreements, mandates, engagement letters for various service providers and agreements with Seaspan Corporation and its affiliates

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Guides, advises, and monitors vessel operations; also assists crew performing vessel maintenance
    • Researches technical information related to equipment breakdowns, malfunctions, improvements, upgrades or modifications for the reliable long-term performance of the vessels
    • Prepares for scheduled dry dockings, surveys and repairs on assigned ships, and arranges and manages supply of spares, stores, and services to vessels before scheduled maintenance and breakdown repairs
    • Manages vessels in full compliance with local and international rules and regulations; and with Seaspan’s Safety Management System (SMS)
    • Analyses ships’ performance and relays this information to the onboard master and chief engineer; ensures compliance with current charter-party terms of employment and other commercial concerns
    • Ensures compliance with all necessary operational certification and survey requirements applicable to assigned vessels
    • Visits vessels in port; may sail with Seaspan ships to reasonably ascertain that they are operated in a safe, reliable and economical way

    Requirements

    • External candidates must have at least one year of experience as a technical superintendent  or vessel manager in a company managing handy-max sized (or larger) vessels engaged in international trading and must have a minimum of one full year in rank as a chief engineer

    Seaspan’s fleet has evolved over time to meet the varying needs of their customer base. They own vessels in a wide range of sizes, from 2,500 TEU ships to their recently delivered 14,000 TEU vessels. Seaspan oversees and manages every aspect of the process from ship to shore.     SEASPAN FINANCIAL REPORTING TEAM

    Seaspan is seeking a Financial Reporting Analyst to join the team. the Financial Reporting Analyst works closely with the Financial and Corporate Reporting Managers to analyze the financial and operating results of the Seaspan group of companies.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Prepares monthly working papers and reports for Management team including analysis related to financial statement captions
    • Assists Financial Reporting Manager in managing month end close process
    • Reviews journal entries and working papers prepared by Intermediate and senior accountants
    • Assists in resolving complex accounting reconciliations
    • Assists with review, analysis, and documentation of accounting policies and procedures
    • Assists with process redevelopment and enhancement of internal controls
    • Assists with preparation of annual budget and quarterly forecasts
    • Provides training and guidance to new and existing team members
    • May assist with preparation and review of public company filings including consolidated financial statements, MD&A, 20-F and earnings releases
    • Prepares audit working papers and fields queries from external and internal auditors
    • Acts as a liaison with other departments and fields queries as needed
    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements

    • Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce, Accounting, Management, or equivalent from a recognized institution
    • Certified in a recognized professional accounting membership (eg.  CPA)
    • Minimum 5-years of accounting experience in audit and/or industry including exposure to financial statement preparation and disclosure
    • Experience with foreign currency transactions and intercompany transactions
    • Strong knowledge of complex account reconciliations including resolution of reconciling items
    • Understands and has applied internal controls and process redevelopment
    • Strong expertise in Excel
    • Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Strong analytical skills

    Additional desired qualifications

    • Some experience with multiple office organization
    • Familiar with financial systems software (e.g. NetSuite, JDE)
    • Previous supervisory experience an asset
