  • Business Development Manager (Europe based)

    Seaspan is seeking a  Business Development Manager to join the team.  The Business Development Manager is responsible for client relationship management and business development/sales activities to grow Seaspan’s current client base and market share, primarily throughout Europe. The Business Development Manager liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers. The role will also provide area representation for our operation and support as required.  Our preference is for the position to be based out of Hamburg, but are flexible in the Europe region for the right candidate.

    This position requires strong communication and negotiation skills, a broad understanding of our business and customers as well as proven sales/chartering experience to market, develop and seek new opportunities to grow our business.  This person must be capable of proactively interfacing with Seaspan's customers/market and various industry stakeholders to sell Seaspan services and demonstrate the drive and ambition to succeed in a competitive global industry.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Drives business development/sales activities related to new business opportunities and vessel chartering to maximize revenues and favorable employment rates.
    • Liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels as well as knowledge of customers issues to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers.
    • Establishes network of key contacts and actively markets and sells Seaspan’s services to grow our client base; engages with customers as well as various key stakeholders within the marine shipping community.
    • Researches, monitors and reports on market conditions, trends and chartering rates for the industry through all appropriate means.
    • Develops and implements marketing and chartering strategies to provide integrated services that meet clients’ requirements and revenue/growth for the company.
    • Strengthens and manages relationships with Seaspan customers. Proactively engages clients on various aspects of their business to provide Customer profile knowledge to Seaspan and to provide tailored best-in-class customer service and response to business needs, challenges and requirements.
    • Monitors charter party obligations of company vessels.  Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with charterers while effectively identifying, communicating internally and managing risks and business interests.
    • Carries out continual risk assessment of vessel operations for potential loss-situations and recommends and assists with mitigation measures.
    • Assists with compiling factual, timely information and documents relating to commercial claims.
    • Demonstrates team work; establishes rapport and maintains effective working relationships within the office(s) and external customers.
    • Performs duties in accordance with the company Safety Management System (SMS); adheres to ISM and company standards.
    • Support and manage new business development initiatives/ projects or other duties as required.

    Job Requirements:

    • Post-secondary degree in relevant field from a recognized institution
    • Minimum three years’ experience in similar chartering or commercial management role with focus on business development/sales activities (formal sales training an asset)
    • Proven track-record in Business Development in the ship chartering business
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
    • Able to negotiate with and influence others, establish rapport and build and maintain effective working relationships
    • Must be well connected within the shipping community, credible and capable of going out into the market and growing the business.
    • Good understanding of time charter parties and commercial operations, containership industry
    • Must be able to properly analyze situations, mitigate and manage risk, and determine a suitable course of action as part of problem-solving skills

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Completed at least three Professional Qualifying Examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) or is a qualified ICS member
    • German and/or French speaking is an asset
    • Containership sector experience is strongly preferred.

  • Financial Analyst

    Seaspan is seeking  a  Financial Analyst  to join the team. As a member of the Financial Services team, the financial analyst records, reports and analyzes the financial and operating results of the Seaspan group of companies through accepted accounting practices. The Financial Analyst works closely with the accounts receivable team and the Commercial team to prepare external and internal reporting requirements.

    Job Responsibilities:     

    • Reconciles and analyzes complex accounts with appropriate working papers and supporting documentation (e.g. Revenue, deferred revenue, accounts receivable, deferred costs, etc.)
    • Reviews and understands contracts to ensure all recoveries and deductions are followed up on a timely basis, including end of term charter hire recaps
    • Prepares and books adjustments resulting from the account reconciliation and analysis
    • Prepares and books monthly journal entries into JDE
    • Reviews journals entered by other accountants into JDE
    • Evaluates & assesses reasonableness of key general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
    • Prepares monthly working papers
    • Provides monthly variance analysis against prior periods
    • Prepares subsidiary financial statements with accompanying notes, responsible for statutory subsidiary financial statements audits and other lending compliance requirements
    • Provides insight and analysis over trends encountered in revenue, deferred revenue, deferred costs,
    • Assists in process improvement and workflow streamlining projects as it relates to accounts receivables/revenue process
    • Assists in ad-hoc projects and/or coverage of other team members tasks as required
    • Assists in preparation and compilation of reporting packages for the senior management
    • Assists with financial statement note preparation and related public company disclosures
    • Acts as business partner to commercial team and operations team
    • Supports other departments with accounting related queries
    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in business/commerce or MBA
    • CPA accreditation
    • Minimum 3 years’ experience with accounting and account analysis
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel)
    • Experience in preparing working papers and leadsheets
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Experience collaborating with departments outside the finance function (operations, commercial, etc)
    • Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

  • Fleet Accountant

    SEASPAN FLEET

    SEASPAN Fleet Accounting TEAM

    Seaspan is seeking a Fleet Accountant to join the team. The Fleet Accountant processes vendor invoices for timely payment and prepares documents to recover costs incurred from charterers.  This individual prepares and analyzes operating expenses and other reports to assist the Superintendents in managing their vessels.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Processes transactions into the Company’s vessel management system (NS5) and the Company’s accounting system (JDE) in accordance with company policies and procedures
    • Prepares monthly account reconciliations and working papers
    • Coordinates the processing of, and accounting for, newbuild vessel deliveries and drydocked vessels
    • Prepares, processes and cross-reviews adjusting journal entries
    • Works with vendors, Operations and Financial Services to resolve Accounts Payable invoice issues
    • Prepares the invoice documents to recover costs and services provided to charterers
    • Audits MGA transactions in accordance with company policies and procedures
    • Prepares the monthly vessel reporting package for operational and financial analysis, follows up on results and reports back to the Superintendents

    Requirements

    • Post-secondary diploma in Business / Management Accounting from a recognized institution
    • 1 year  experience working in a similar role within accounting
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel)
    • Familiar with financial systems software (e.g. JDE)
    • Enjoys working with numbers, performs with a high degree of accuracy and has experience maintaining large spreadsheets

    • Able to work in a team environment, both financial and operational
    • Demonstrated interest in business operations

  • Associate Counsel

    Seaspan is seeking an Associate Counsel to join the team. The Associate Counsel reports directly to the General Counsel, and is primarily responsible for all vessel and maritime matters and providing support to the operations and commercial departments.

    The Associate Counsel will have extensive maritime knowledge in the international shipping industry, and preferably in the containership sector. The Associate Counsel should be knowledgeable with International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulatory standards, MARPOL, sanctions, anti-bribery, crewing union agreements, vessel chartering contracts and shipbuilding agreements. The Associate Counsel will also deal with insurance and maritime related litigation and dispute resolution matters, and will be directly instructing external counsel on these matters.

    The Associate Counsel will work with a great degree of autonomy, must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage projects with a number of cross functional groups. As well, the Associate Counsel will be responsible for formulating, setting and enforcing policies.

    The Associate Counsel will be joining a department that currently consists of three other lawyers (including the General Counsel), one paralegal and one legal assistant.  From time to time, the Associate Counsel will assist on securities offerings, financings, corporate governance and board meetings.

    Requirements:

    • Be a qualified lawyer in good standing with a Canadian, UK or US bar association
    • A minimum five-year call
    • Focused experience in maritime law
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    • Experience working independently in a fast paced, cross functional role

    Additional desired qualifications:

    • Experience with public companies and secured financing are assets
    • Previous in-house experience is desired, but not mandatory

  • Human Resources Manager

    COMPANY BACKGROUND

    Seaspan is seeking a Human Resources Manager to join the team.  The Human Resources Manager provides human resource and payroll services for Seaspan shore employees and supervises the Vancouver office services team. Responsibilities include recruitment and retention, employee relations, orientations, performance management, and administration. The position supports compliance with legislation and company policies as they relate to employees.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Recruits, interviews and selects employees with the hiring manager to fill vacancies for shore based positions and completes the necessary hiring paperwork. Recruits directly and maintains contacts with placement agencies, using when necessary

    • Manages payroll* and benefits in compliance with public company requirements. Assists with compensation planning and management. Liaises with financial services and provides reporting

    • Provides consultation and advice to management and employees in the areas of performance management, employee development, and on related policies and legislation; interprets relevant policies, procedures, practices and legislation

    • Ensures compliance with legislation related to employment, assists with public company corporate governance requirements, prepares HR reports as required

    • Responds to queries, resolves issues, and facilitates communication.Surveys staff on engagement, conducts exit interviews responds to employee suggestions and participates in organizing company events.

    • Ensures new employees are properly oriented when joining the company and are familiarized with key policies

    • Provides support and back-up to the Director, HR and leadership and guidance to HR team members. Authorizes department expenses

    • Works with administration team to ensure smooth running of the office environment including reception, local accommodation, space-planning, office supplies, etc

    Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Human Resources or equivalent

    • Ten or more years of Human Resources experience

    • Strong administrative skills

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style

    • Sound organization skills

    • Able to prioritize and multi-task

    • Attention to detail

    Additional desired qualifications:

    • CHRP designation is preferred in Canada, a Master’s Degree in Mumbai

    • Previous experience recruiting for technical and financial positions
