  • Business Development Manager (Europe based)

    Seaspan is seeking a  Business Development Manager to join the team.  The Business Development Manager is responsible for client relationship management and business development/sales activities to grow Seaspan’s current client base and market share, primarily throughout Europe. The Business Development Manager liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers. The role will also provide area representation for our operation and support as required.  Our preference is for the position to be based out of Hamburg, but are flexible in the Europe region for the right candidate.

    This position requires strong communication and negotiation skills, a broad understanding of our business and customers as well as proven sales/chartering experience to market, develop and seek new opportunities to grow our business.  This person must be capable of proactively interfacing with Seaspan's customers/market and various industry stakeholders to sell Seaspan services and demonstrate the drive and ambition to succeed in a competitive global industry.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Drives business development/sales activities related to new business opportunities and vessel chartering to maximize revenues and favorable employment rates.
    • Liaises with the team in Vancouver on the operational functionality and charter-party performance of assigned vessels as well as knowledge of customers issues to provide best-in-class customer service and value-added solutions to Seaspan customers.
    • Establishes network of key contacts and actively markets and sells Seaspan’s services to grow our client base; engages with customers as well as various key stakeholders within the marine shipping community.
    • Researches, monitors and reports on market conditions, trends and chartering rates for the industry through all appropriate means.
    • Develops and implements marketing and chartering strategies to provide integrated services that meet clients’ requirements and revenue/growth for the company.
    • Strengthens and manages relationships with Seaspan customers. Proactively engages clients on various aspects of their business to provide Customer profile knowledge to Seaspan and to provide tailored best-in-class customer service and response to business needs, challenges and requirements.
    • Monitors charter party obligations of company vessels.  Establishes and maintains a positive working relationship with charterers while effectively identifying, communicating internally and managing risks and business interests.
    • Carries out continual risk assessment of vessel operations for potential loss-situations and recommends and assists with mitigation measures.
    • Assists with compiling factual, timely information and documents relating to commercial claims.
    • Demonstrates team work; establishes rapport and maintains effective working relationships within the office(s) and external customers.
    • Performs duties in accordance with the company Safety Management System (SMS); adheres to ISM and company standards.
    • Support and manage new business development initiatives/ projects or other duties as required.

    Job Requirements:

    • Post-secondary degree in relevant field from a recognized institution
    • Minimum three years’ experience in similar chartering or commercial management role with focus on business development/sales activities (formal sales training an asset)
    • Proven track-record in Business Development in the ship chartering business
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills
    • Able to negotiate with and influence others, establish rapport and build and maintain effective working relationships
    • Must be well connected within the shipping community, credible and capable of going out into the market and growing the business.
    • Good understanding of time charter parties and commercial operations, containership industry
    • Must be able to properly analyze situations, mitigate and manage risk, and determine a suitable course of action as part of problem-solving skills

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Completed at least three Professional Qualifying Examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) or is a qualified ICS member
    • German and/or French speaking is an asset
    • Containership sector experience is strongly preferred.

    SEASPAN TEAM

    Seaspan is seeking a Office Coordinator (Hong Kong) to join the team. The Office Coordinator has two main responsibilities, to provide human resources and office and fleet administrative support for the Seaspan office in Hong Kong. The Office Coordinator performs an array of administrative duties in support of the office including supporting Executive Leadership Team members while in Hong Kong, dealing with office vendors, coding invoices, purchasing office supplies, liaison between offices, and handling routine correspondence. This position manages the switchboard, directs phone calls, greets guests, and distributes mail.  (There is no dedicated reception resource in Hong Kong office.)

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provides on-site support to Executive Leadership Team members while in Hong Kong, this may include arranging meetings and catering, booking travel or transportation, preparing documentation etc. 
    • Maintains close contact with primary Executive Assistant (or similar to ensure effective coordination and seamless coverage to the executive.
    • Ensures the office environment presents a professional, positive image and company standards are maintained. Works to keep company kitchen/supplies well stocked, in good order, and operating effectively.
    • Supports a safe, secure, and professional office environment. Manages physical access to the office. Assists with requests for building maintenance, janitorial, etc. Checks copy rooms regularly and orders and stocks supplies as needed.
    • Deals with company mail on a daily basis. Collects and distributes mail. Assists with FedEx and local courier packages, handling import/export trade declarations.
    • As it related to office services, communicates with vendors, ensures goods and services supplied meet company requirements and contract terms. May set up vendors when needed and negotiates corporate rates with local hotels.
    • Codes G&A office invoices and approves same within approval limits. Liaises with Accounts Payable to facilitate timely processing and payment. 
    • Acts as a point of contact and works with corporate HR, communications, legal and office services.
    • Provides site orientation to new employees and handles departure procedure for departing employees. Liaises with Total Rewards team on payroll and benefit administration. 
    • Coordinates and supports internal meetings. Assists with catering orders for various groups and meetings. Ensures company meeting rooms are kept maintained.
    • Maintains company information regarding the HK office including business license, floor plan and contact information. Posts regularly to SeaNet, the company intranet. Assists with office/workstation moves.
    • Supervises the Office Helper position. Communicates expectations to direct report(s), manages performance, and provides leadership and support to team member(s).
    • Monitors expenses of the department, assists with monthly variance reporting. Ensures that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures.
    • Assist the Operations team with officer briefings and overflow work.
    • Performs other duties as required.

    Requirements

    • Good verbal and written communication skills and writing style in both English and Cantonese
    • Professional and friendly presentation, remains calm under pressure
    • Previous experience in an administrative role with strong organizational skills
    • Able to work in a team and be responsive to internal customers

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Demonstrated track record of sound judgement and professionalism with the ability to work with senior level executives across multiple business lines and global regions

    • Monitor and respond to all tickets in the IT ticket system in accordance with agreed SLA (Service Level Agreement)
    • Escalate problem ticket to Tier-3 level support – Infrastructure and Application.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Supports recruitment process, including posting jobs and advertisements, screening resumes and conducting phone interviews, responding to candidates, tracking applications, and completing new hire and IT forms, checklists and packages, and preparing and conducting orientation and training

    SEASPAN CREWING TEAM

    Seaspan is seeking a Personnel Officer to join the team. The Personnel Officer is responsible for managing communication between management offices and sea staff, and coordinates with global port agents to ensure that crew on-boarding and off-boarding arrangements are performed efficiently in cost-effective ports. This position works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistants to ensure that 'fit to travel' requirements are achieved and completed before sea staff are dispatched to company-managed vessels

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Ensures timely completion of required activities outlines in the Competence Development Plan (CDP) before sea staff are dispatched, schedules sea staff pre-joining briefings, and advises all parties with follow-up reports

    • Ensures logistics of sea staff and supernumeraries joining and off-signing are carried out promptly and communicated to agents, vessel, and other as required

    • Works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistant to ensure that all crew relief nomination have valid documentation and met all visa requirements

    • Coordinates daily with the planner on crew relief nominations and provides daily status updates to the assistant personnel superintendent

    • Communicates with vessels and provides timely responses where possible; also escalates pertinent concerns and issues onboard to relevant senior manager as required

    • Arranges and reviews flag state documentation status of sea staff, ensuring compliance at all time; also applies for flags state dispensation where required

    • Approved travel expenses and other vendor bills as applicable for officers joining or signing-off and their supernumeraries (escalates exceptions to policy or costs which exceed signing authority)

    • Prepares management reports where required

    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements

    • Graduate in any stream (three years university or equivalent)

    • Minimum three years working experience in a shipping company, at least two of those years as an assistant personnel officer

    Seaspan is seeking an Accounts Payable Team Lead to join the team. The Accounts Payable Team Lead is responsible for Seaspan group’s accounts payable functions and for ensuring that all invoices are properly coded, approved, and paid in a timely manner. This position generates and analyzes control reports and assists with the analysis, development, and implementation of processes and procedures to ensure efficient, accurate and timely accounting information; also supervises a small team.

    Primary Responsibilities:

    • Act as AP representative with both internal and external parties; provides assistance to both suppliers and colleagues to resolve issues related to invoice and payment queries
    • Supervises a small AP group and coordinates work flow and priorities to ensure targets and timelines are met and processes and procedures are followed
    • Ensures all accounts payable functions are completed timely and accurately, cross checks and posts voucher entries, payment registers and journal entries into JDE
    • Reviews, analyzes and recommends improvements to processes and procedures; identifies opportunities to improve AP controls as appropriate

    • Minimum of five years of accounts payable experience in a public corporation environment

    • Prepares, verifies and processes receivable invoices and cash receipts in a timely manner

    • Monitor and respond to all tickets in the IT ticket system in accordance with agreed SLA (Service Level Agreement)

    Seaspan is seeking an Associate Counsel to join the team. The Associate Counsel reports directly to the General Counsel, and is primarily responsible for all vessel and maritime matters and providing support to the operations and commercial departments. The Associate Counsel provides advice and accountability on such matters as marine operations, commercial, HSEQ, environmental, corporate reporting, corporate governance, multi-jurisdictional securities, vessel acquisitions, dispositions, structured finance, and contractual documentation; also acts as a point of contact with outside counsel. The Associate Counsel will work with a great degree of autonomy, must be detail oriented and have the ability to manage projects with a number of cross functional groups. As well, the Associate Counsel will be responsible for formulating, setting and enforcing policies. The Associate Counsel will be joining a department that currently consists of three other lawyers (including the General Counsel), one paralegal and one legal assistant.  From time to time, the Associate Counsel will assist on securities offerings, financings, corporate governance and board meetings.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Prepares for and attends board of directors meetings as required; provides general advice to our board of directors and attends to other general corporate governance matters
    • Drafts and prepares confidentiality agreements, commercial contracts, mandate, engagement letters for various service providers and agreements with Seaspan Corporation
    • Provides in-house counsel advice, accountability, and leadership on corporate reporting, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance
    • Acts as a liaison with outside counsel worldwide when SSML and its affiliates engage them; works with corporate counsel, to manage their needs

    • Ensures company's legal obligations are fulfilled particularly around debt covenants, new build agreements, and credit facilities. Oversees and assists external counsel when negotiation and drafting of credit facility agreements, leasing financing agreements, and other financing structures
    • Assists in the preparation of US Securities Commission and New York Stock Exchange filings, including annual reports, proxy materials for shareholder meetings, and quarterly financial filings
    • Ensures that all reporting employees adhere to company policies and procedures 

    Requirements: 

    • Be a member in good standing with the Law Society
    • A minimum four-year call 
    • Broad related commercial and legal experience

    Job Responsibilities:     

    • Reconciles and analyzes complex accounts with appropriate working papers and supporting documentation (eg. Revenue, deferred revenue, accounts receivable, deferred costs, etc.)
