  • Maritime Technology Specialist

    Position Description

    The Maritime Technology Specialist is responsible for identifying and pursuing the best course for reaching the corporate goals on Energy and Environmental Efficiency, leveraging innovative technology and digital solutions. This individual will also be responsible for supporting any project or development related to the combination of ship systems and digital solutions in the company.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Contribute to the fleet Asset Development Plan by proposing and modeling the most feasible solutions to improve Seaspan’s fleet CII (AER, EEOI), EEXI and EEDI in order to achieve and improve on the IMO and Poseidon principles target results
    • Analyze the Return of Investment of innovative technical retrofit solutions and identify new possibilities
    • Increase value from Fleet Performance analytics on nautical performance (paint performance and selection criteria, hull cleaning solutions and frequency, etc.)
    • Evaluate hull form performance improvements and identify new possibilities
    • Evaluate the feasibility of energy and environmental efficiency improvements on a system and ship level
    • Identify the best digital solutions for the integration of new ship technologies into onboard systems
    • Develop and further the company’s efforts for developing digital twins and energy flow simulations for critical onboard systems
    • Support the development of the company’s maintenance strategy and implementation of condition-based maintenance mechanisms
    • Support with project management on topics around maintenance development, fleet performance improvements, prototype installations and new build concept development as required
    • Cross-functional support on topics around digitalization, condition-based maintenance, ship system simulations, etc.
    • Act as a backup for Fleet Performance related reports, cargo capacity related questions, new build specification evaluations

    Requirements

    • Five years of work experience in the marine industry is preferred
    • High skill level and personal interest towards digital solutions and mathematical problem solving (AI, machine-learning, digital twin, predictive modelling, etc.)
    • Understanding of Business Feasibility
    • Effective analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skill
    • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain productive relationships with stakeholders in the organization
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    • Innovative / creative mindset, along with a can-do and curious attitude
    • Passion for the environment

    Additional Desired Qualifications

    • Experience with ISO Management Systems
    • Master’s Degree in Naval Architecture and/or Marine Engineering

  • Legal Assistant

    Position Description:

    The Legal Assistant provides support to in-house counsel, maintains library of legal documents (both paper and electronic), and prepares for board of directors meetings.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Prepares drafts of correspondence and legal documents
    • Coordinates office calendar, including sending and accepting invitations, reminders, and preparation for scheduled events
    • Assists with sanctions screening of financial institutes, vendors, seafarers and 3rd party contractors
    • Under the direction of in-house counsel, helps prepare closing documentation for financings, asset acquisitions, and other large transactions
    • Organizes Board and Committee meetings; helps prepare meeting materials, and liaises with board members to ensure all aspects go smoothly
    • Manages office records as they relate to the legal team, including creating and organizing files, maintaining contacts, paying and recording of invoices and completing and storing confidential documents
    • Participates in preparation of due diligence information as needed
    • Arranges travel for members of the legal team as needed
    • Processes expense statements for the legal team
    • Assists the paralegal in drafting of ship registration applications and liaises with various ship registries, and regulatory bodies, dealing with maritime matters regarding the company fleet
    • Assists the paralegal with corporate maintenance of entities in Seaspan Group
    • Provides periodic coverage of reception, works effectively with other assistants, maintains department contact information and posts department information to the intranet as a member of the administration team
    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements/Qualifications:

    • Minimum 3 years’ experience as senior administrative, legal or executive assistant
    • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
    • Attention to detail

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience in a public company preferred
    • Experience working in a law firm or legal assistant/paralegal training an asset

    Position Description:

    Seaspan Corp. has a maturing Data, BI and Analytics capability with many business opportunities where the use of data may derive business value. Initiatives and focus areas are prominent in the following areas:

    • Forecasting & Budgeting

    We have established an enterprise data warehouse as primary source for our cohort of cross functional analysts to tap into, ensuring data governance principles are adhered to. We are seeking an intern to assist with the management of our Data Governance initiative and to help centralize our data within the enterprise data warehouse.

    The role will be based within Corporate IT and will also involve substantial work across many business teams. This is a great opportunity for you to gain exposure across a wide range of business functions, and to apply your academic knowledge and analytical thinking to support the development, implementation, and testing of enterprise reports, dashboards and data sets, and to contribute to the improvement of critical data management processes and Data Governance initiatives. Ultimately, progress on any of the assigned work stream will make a positive impact to the business.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Assist in the gathering of high-level requirements and capture business needs through interactions with business stakeholders, technical and data stewards. Clearly articulate and document business requirements.

    • Maintain an ongoing issues log and help to prioritize tasks based on business impact.

    • Work cross functionally to map data flow and any manual data management processes to guide project decisions. Understand data dependencies across departments.

    • Assist data governance team with the setup of the business glossaries including setting the data quality indicators and applying data classifications and sensitivity to the metadata.

    • Act as a problem solver to drive successful completion of assigned tasks.

    • Support communication efforts for the program.

    • Collaborate with stakeholders to recommend and implement appropriate business solutions.

    • Help to develop and implement data standards, policies, and procedures that lead to improved data integrity

    Requirements/Qualifications:

    • A good understanding of corporate finance processes

    • Experience with MS Visio and process and data flow mapping would be an asset

    • High sense of urgency and follow through

    • Research skills combined with analytical and problem-solving abilities

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills and stakeholder management.

    Position Description:     

    The HR and Talent Acquisition Business Partner develops and implements strategic recruitment initiatives that attract and retain high performing talent to Seaspan.  This role will be hands’ on with talent acquisition (full-cycle recruitment), onboarding, employee relations, training and employer branding initiatives.  The ideal candidate is creative, detail-oriented, can operate at a fast pace and is passionate about continuous improvement. This position plays a key role in building a strong employer brand for our company to ensure we attract, hire and retain the most qualified employees.  

    Job Responsibilities:          

    • Accountable for managing all job requisitions and full-cycle recruitment for these requisitions:
      • Partners with hiring managers to design, update and target job descriptions for ideal candidate profiles 
      • Advertises job openings on company’s careers page, social media, job boards and internally
      • Sources and screens potential candidates from various online channels (e.g. social media and professional platforms)
      • Builds a talent pipeline for future hiring needs
      • Focuses on delivery of key recruitment metrics such as time to hire and quality of hire 
      • Ensures a high quality candidate experience, including all direct discussions - interviews; to indirect discussions - candidate management and hiring manager interactions 
    • Collaborates with HR Leadership Team on refining recruitment strategy, aligning processes to the strategy and training managers on the processes
    • Develops, maintains and monitors employer branding efforts in partnership with a cross-functional team of experts
    • Manages the Applicant Tracking System, and leverages it for full talent acquisition capability
    • Monitor key HR metrics, including time-to-hire, quality of hire, and source of hire
    • Supports global hires through the immigration and relocation process 
    • Acts as a consultant to new hires to support their onboarding and integration into the organization 
    • Supports the employee base through onboarding, including partnership with managers on developing an experience-focused integration of new hires
    • Manages the off boarding process for outgoing employees, including exit interviews, trend reporting, and supporting managers through the transition
    • Acts as a key point of contact for employees including answering questions related to policies, resolving concerns and addressing gaps in the business through creative thinking and solutions   

    Requirements:

    • BSc in Human Resources Management, Organizational Psychology or relevant field
    • Minumum 5 years of proven work experience as an HR Talent Acquistion Specialist, Generalist or similar role
    • Familiarity with Applicant Tracking Systems 
    • Experience with strategic sourcing, pipelining and global recruitment 
    • A can-do attitude with a drive for continuous improvement 
    • Able to prioritize and multi-task
    • Strong attention to detail

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Previous experience recruiting for technical, financial or marine positions preferred.
    • Exposure to international relocation and temporary work permits

    Position Description:

    As a member of the Financial Services team, the Senior Accountant records, reports and analyzes the financial and operating results of the Seaspan group of companies through accepted accounting practices. The Senior Accountant works closely with the Financial Reporting Analysts to prepare external and internal reporting requirements.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Reconciles and analyzes complex accounts with appropriate working papers and supporting documentation (eg. inter-company accounts, capitalized interest, etc.)
    • Prepares adjustments resulting from the account reconciliation and analysis
    • Prepares and books monthly journal entries and accruals
    • Reviews journals entered by other accountants
    • Evaluates & assesses reasonableness of key general ledger accounts on a monthly basis
    • Prepares monthly working papers
    • Provides monthly variance analysis against prior periods and budget
    • Prepares subsidiary financial statements with accompanying notes, responsible for statutory subsidiary financial statements audits and other lending compliance requirements
    • Assists in ad-hoc projects and/or coverage of other team member tasks as required
    • Assists in preparation and compilation of reporting packages for the senior management and Board of Directors, including annual budget and forecasts
    • Assists with financial statement note preparation and related public company disclosures
    • Supports other departments with accounting related queries
    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements:

    • Accounting designation, e.g. CPA
    • Minimum 4 years’ general accounting experience with exposure to AR and AP
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel)
    • Experience in preparing working papers and leadsheets
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
    • Knowledge of account reconciliations and resolution of reconciling items
    • Strong attention to detail
    • Strong analytical skills
    • Ability to work under pressure with strict deadlines
    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Working knowledge of NetSuite
    • Experience in financial reporting

    Job Description

    The Commercial Coordinator provides support to the Commercial department and develops specialist support in line with departmental objectives and targets to ensure customer satisfaction for Seaspan customers. The Commercial Coordinator will provide project management and administrative support for the Commercial department to achieve business results.

    Job Responsibilities

    • Liaise, coordinate and develop seamless processes with other departments to obtain actionable insights  including budget and market forecast information relevant to customer account management and the container shipping industry, in order to facilitate the successful initiative of creative solutions developed to promote customer success.

    • Analyze, recommend and improve processes to drive efficiencies for the Commercial team to support an improved client facing culture

    • Develop subject matter expertise in systems to support business operations, teaches the team best practices and is accountable for overall data integrity within the system of record

    • Prepares reports for the team, KPI summaries and other reports, including claims, or financial requirements, in collaboration with Finance  team

    • Responds to inquiries and issues on behalf of commercial management; exercises sound judgment when necessary and escalates issues to managers when appropriate

    • Update relevant customer information as well as maintaining key milestones within the in-house customer software, as directed by the Director, Commercial or other team members

    • Pulls reports and conducts analysis in order to gain actionable insights for business purposes, which include contract updates, expiries and other actionable items relevant to the teams successful management of customer accounts, and the relevant information data bases.

    • Creating documentation aligned with charter’s needs, including responding to routine operational concerns

    • Partnering with Accounts Receivable to gain real-time insights into payments, revenue and current charter standings. Including documentation of charter-specific requirements in order to promote successful revenue recovery and efficiencies under the relevant charter contracts.

    • Responding to charterers, coordinating necessary and relevant data and information to draft routine reports as instructed

    • Liaise with operations and finance to resolve issues as they  relate to cargo or vessel claims, under the instruction of the Commercial team

    • Manage office records as they relate to the Commercial team, including creating and organizing files, maintaining contacts, completing and storing confidential documents, and produces regular reports, in coordination with the SSW IT and Legal departments

    • Supports the Commercial team by coordinating department meetings, including sending and accepting electronic invitations, reminders, and preparation. Keeps accurate minutes of meetings

    • As a member of the administration team provides periodic coverage of reception, works effectively with other assistants, maintains department contact information and posts department information to the intranet

    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements

    • A minimum of two years’ of experience in an administrative role or an analyst role

    • Bachelor Degree or similar

    • Able to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel)

    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with good writing style

    • Adaptable and self-motivated; keen to learn and assimilates well

    Additional Desired Qualifications

    • Previous studies in shipping business, charter or commercial work along with some experience in a shipping company

    • Completion of at least three Professional Qualifying Examinations with the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS) or is a qualified ICS member would be an advantage

    • Experience with documentation control, contract management, and/or insurance documents
