  • Personnel Manager

    Position Description:
    The Personnel Manager is responsible for the effective staffing of assigned vessels in compliance with Flag, Class, and other mandatory or prescribed requirements as they relate to fleet personnel. This position works with other departments to ensure competency, supports engagement and retention of sea staff, and manages assigned fleet personnel group of shore employees.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS). In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
    • Works with the Global Talent Acquisition (GTA) team to select qualified and highly competent officers (and crew) for the company’s vessels. Conducts selection interviews and advises the GTA Manager of staffing needs
    • Approves assignment of officers to vessels as recommended by the team’s planners. Oversees onboarding and sign-off of ship staff and manages any issues or exceptions to company policy regarding ship assignment
    • Develops strong working relationships with officers. Evaluates and reports on ship personnel and resolves or brings forward any disciplinary/performance issues for assigned vessels. Conducts briefings and de-briefings
    • In cooperation with the Fleet Superintendent, addresses concerns and grievances of ship staff on assigned vessels. Monitors emails and ensures timely response to communication received from vessels and officers on leave
    • Supports the Seaspan Management System and ensures compliance and that non-conformities are addressed and appropriate action taken
    • Identifies training needs of ship staff, assesses, and makes recommendations regarding promotion, and participates in Officer Forums and roadshows
    • Communicates expectations to direct reports, manages performance and provides leadership and support to team members
    • Works with Fleet Team, Training, Marine Services, Financial Reporting and other teams to ensure deliverables are met and provides guidance and support
    • Performs other duties as required.

     

    Requirements:

    • Marine Engineer or Master (Class 1) with a minimum of three years’ experience sailing at that rank on deep sea vessels
    • External candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a Personnel Manager or similar
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (including Outlook, Word, and Excel)
    • Effective problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills
    • Sound organizational and planning skills
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style.

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Containership experience with panamax size ships
    • Familiarity with Seaspan Corporation vessels is an asset
    • Post-graduate degree or Human Resources professional designation
    • Understanding and experience with ISO Management

    •   Availability via a Blackberry device or other mobile device outside of office hours
    • Occasional international travel is required and may be on short notice
    • Must maintain home internet connection for work outside of office hours

     Position Description:   

    The Personnel Officer manages communications between management offices and sea staff, and coordinates with global port agents to ensure that crew on-boarding and off-boarding arrangements are performed efficiently in cost-effective ports.

    This position works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistants to ensure that ‘fit to travel’ requirements are achieved and completed before sea staff is dispatched to company-managed vessels.

    Job Responsibilities:

    • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005), and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS).  In keeping with this and other compliance policies, they understand their duty to report any environmental noncompliance and/or concern to their manager or members of the senior management team (including the highest level of management) either directly or through the open reporting system as per Management System guidelines
    • Ensures timely completion of required activities outlined in the Competence Development Plan (CDP) before sea staff are dispatched, schedules sea staff pre-joining briefings, and advises all parties with follow-up reports
    • Ensures logistics of sea staff and supernumeraries joining and off-signing are carried out promptly and communicated to agents, vessel, and others as required Works with the assistant personnel officer and crewing assistant to ensure that all crew relief nominations have valid documentation and met all visa requirements; also escalates pertinent concerns and issues onboard to relevant senior manager as required.
    • Communicates with vessels and provides timely responses where possible;
    • Arranges and reviews flag state documentation status of sea staff, ensuring compliance at all times; also applies for flag state dispensation where required
    • Approves travel expenses and other vendor bills as applicable for officers joining or signing-off and their supernumeraries (escalates exceptions to policy or costs which exceed signing authority)
    • Prepares management reports where required
    • Performs other duties as required

    Requirements:

    • Graduate in any stream (three years university or equivalent)
    • Minimum of three years of working experience in a shipping company, at least two of those years as an assistant personnel officer
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills, and good writing style
    • Able to prioritize and multi-task
    • Attention to detail.
    • Good interpersonal skills with a customer focus

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Previous sailing experience
    • Experience in a multinational company

  • Training Superintendent - Nautical

    Position Description:
    This position develops and directs navigational and technical learning. The Superintendent, Training- Nautical develops company-wide strategic training initiatives, including competence development.

    Job Responsibilities:
    • Delivers effective induction programs, Conducts Pre-joining Training in the latest company 'Incidents', SMS, PSC, MARPOL, COSWP, Security, Navigation, pre-joining orientation, briefing, and in-house courses
    • Manages and delivers navigational and ratings training and support to comply with legislation and agreed customer requirements,
    • Monitors the company’s seafarer related Competence Management System. Assesses the Company’s Career Development Initiative (CDI) / Command Partnership Scheme and subsequently facilitates oral examinations (as applicable) and provides recommendations to CDO for promotions
    • Supports navigational and technical competence development for all seafarers. Works closely with management to identify learning opportunities and develop appropriate training content to support company growth initiatives.
    • Conduct Navigational Simulator courses and assessments as per company and industry guidelines.
    • Oversees curriculum design, learning tools, and needs analysis/gap management, follow-up evaluations, and resulting curriculum improvements and deliverables
    • Monitors changes in statutory and regulatory training requirements to forecast training needs and ensure appropriate measures are implemented
    • Research cost-effective training solutions and creates training guidelines for modern technologies, navigational, cargo, and planned maintenance and other software programs
    • Provides regular status reports based on statistics, metrics, ROI, and project and development results
    • Performs other duties and tasks as required
    • Is familiar with the Health, Safety, Environmental Protection and Quality Policy (PL-005) and understands the responsibilities under the Environmental Management System (EMS).     Requirements:
    • Master Mariner with 2-3 years of command experience
    • Minimum three years’ experience in the field of marine related training, including training design and development.
    • Train the trainer course or similar
    • Container shipping experience
    • Thorough knowledge of good operating practices, MARPOL, SMS, ISPS, PMS
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite
    • Excellent presentation skills.

    Additional Desired Qualifications:
    • Certified lead auditor for ISO standards
    • Risk management, incident investigation and root cause analysis course
